Abstract

This article presents a systematic review of approaches to modernizing multiple-launch rocket systems based on the use of small-caliber unguided air-launched rockets, including the S-8 family, from the perspective of cross-service standardization and modular design. The scientific novelty of this work lies in a comprehensive comparative analysis of existing ground-based launch systems for air-launched unguided rockets, conducted using unified criteria for assessing their functional capabilities, limitations, and place in the overall evolution of rocket artillery systems. The main types of implemented solutions (adaptable, modular, and hybrid) are summarized and classified, allowing these developments to be viewed not as isolated initiatives, but as a manifestation of a consistent trend toward expanding the range of rocket munitions used in ground-based systems. A comparison of their conceptual characteristics with those of conventional MLRS systems was conducted, providing the basis for an objective assessment of the effectiveness and feasibility of such solutions. The practical significance of the study lies in the potential use of the findings in research and development efforts aimed at developing and modernizing rocket fire support systems, as well as in formulating requirements for advanced modular launchers.
