The article examines the peculiarities of the combat work of artillery units at open firing positions in the conditions of modern armed conflicts. A comparative historical analysis has been conducted. Special attention is paid to the impact of modern reconnaissance tools, unmanned aerial vehicles, counter-battery warfare systems, and precision weapons on the vulnerability of artillery. The main tactical methods used to increase the survivability of artillery units are identified. The psychological aspects of artillery combat work are also considered. A conclusion is drawn about the necessity of integrating artillery into a unified network-centric system, which includes UAVs, air defense systems, electronic warfare, and automated control systems. Promising directions for development are identified: the introduction of artificial intelligence, the robotization of artillery, and the widespread use of “smart” munitions. The work may be used in scientific research, in the preparation of tactical training, and for educational purposes.
