The article reveals the theoretical foundations of modern archaeography. The role of the distinguished scientist V.P. Kozlov in the formation of the modern vision of archaeography is shown. Based on the analysis, it is presented that archaeology is endowed with its own methodological base and plays an independent role in the general complex of historical sciences and scientific disciplines about man and society. This role is expressed in the special mission of public publication as one of the forms of transmission of documentary memory, which is a carrier of information about the past. Discovered, the object of archaeography is documentary publication, and the subject of the document, which by means of special principles, techniques and rules of its publication, receives new life in documentary publication, which leads to the excitement of the document, which means its actualization as a historical source. A scientific definition, history of the emergence and development of military archeography as an independent branch of knowledge is given. The relationship and place of military archeography among military and historical scientific disciplines are identified. An analytical assessment of the development of archaeography and military archeology in Kazakhstan has been made. Scientifically based recommendations are offered for the creation of a domestic school of military archeography.
