The Problem of Gender Inequality in the US Military Service

Abstract

This article provides an in-depth analysis of the literature regarding gender inequality in military service. In doing so, it reveals challenges and opportunities for women's integration and finds new directions for future research. Recent academic studies have shown that women are still a growing minority in most Western military forces. The scientists also reported on the decision to increase the number of women in combat roles, as this could increase adverse experiences due to closer proximity to men in environments where there is little to no privacy. Conversely, scientific studies have shown that more egalitarian women reported significantly fewer incidents of sexual harassment. Moreover, our findings suggest that it would be fruitful to involve women in ground combat as special forces operators in order to reduce marginalization and sexual harassment by gaining respect in a male-dominated culture.
